alternative teaching
Alternative teaching is similar to parallel teaching in the sense that each teacher works with a separate group of students. However, instead of being split equally, the class is separated in groups that are each taught a different lesson, skills or topic.
PROS: Alternative teaching allows for maximum differentiation for different learning levels. If you have a class with diverse levels of learning, alternative teaching provides excellent opportunities to be able to reach various learners. The small groups can also allow a teacher more control to address off-task behavior.
CONS: While alternative teaching can be a positive way to provide differentiate and individualized attention to students, teachers must be careful not to rely on separate grouping excessively because it may cause some students to become "pigeonholed" into a certain group. If this model is constantly used to separate students based on demographics such as learning level, skill level or special-needs, it can cause the class to become segregated, further undermining the goal of an inclusion setting to be less restrictive. The model can then become ineffective.
